Negotiation of Health Insurance

Health is a very individual matter, and so the standard policies of an insurance provider cannot possibly cover all the individual needs of each customer. Luckily, it is standard to have some room for negotiation when it comes time to choose a cover option. In addition, changing circumstances mean that customers sometimes have to change their health insurance agreement to make sure that they are still covered.

Development of new health conditions can affect the way a healthcare policy works. Provision should be made for regular appointments and procedures that may be a part of living with the condition. Specialist cover is generally available for these cases, and this can easily be added onto an existing policy. A good company will be able to advise the customer on the best way to fit this into their agreement.

Sometimes an individual decides that they wish to expand their health insurance by covering for people other than themselves; these are often spouses and other family members. This is a good way to simplify your dealings with the health insurance company, instead of taking out several smaller policies.

Make sure to include all information when taking out a new policy with the company – everything that affects your health is important and any issues must be revealed to the insurer.

Health insurance is increasingly popular in the UK with those who wish to seek a better standard of care, better medical facilities, and quick treatment.  It provides policyholders with peace of mind that they will be taken care of in the event of medical need.

Despite all the benefits of health insurance, it is important to be aware of the facts when purchasing a policy.  An uninformed individual could end up with a policy that does not meet their needs, which could leave them stuck in the event of illness if they do not actually have the level of cover they thought they had.

Therefore, the most important thing for a policyholder to understand is exactly what is covered.  Private health insurance does not cover all types of illness, and before committing to a policy, it is vital to discuss your options with a private health insurance provider, who can consider your needs and help assist you in selecting a tailor-made policy.  All policies must be thoroughly reviewed before commitment.

Even once a policy is chosen, the policyholder must ensure that the medical history they disclose is full and accurate, or they could find themselves not being covered at all should illness arise.  For example, smokers must disclose that they smoke when taking out the policy.  Smoking will raise insurance premiums significantly, but if it is not disclosed and illness connected to the smoking arises, the policy will not pay out.

Speaking to a health insurance company that is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority is very important, as they can help to consider all the healthcare needs and circumstances of an individual, and assist them in selecting a policy that is suitable for their needs.

Healthcare and Travel

If you are thinking about going on holiday, you may want to consider purchasing medical insurance, especially when travelling overseas. That way you can be sure that you will get prompt treatment if you fall ill or injure yourself in an accident on holiday.

Vaccinations

While travel health cover doesn’t usually cover the cost of vaccinations before you go on holiday, these are vital, especially when travelling overseas to different climates. There are many diseases across the globe that you may not have immunity against and vaccinations are there to protect you. Before travelling, speak to your doctor about which vaccinations might be required for your trip.

Medication

If you have any pre-existing conditions that you are treating with drugs and medicines, you need to make sure that your prescriptions are fully up-to-date. Always take a copy of your prescription with you when you travel. Having health insurance should also help you pay for the cost of buying medication, if required. It is also a good idea to establish whether your medication is legal in the country you will be visiting.

Travel Health Insurance

In the UK, health cover is free under the National Health Service, but many people forget that when they are holidaying to other countries, they may have to pay for healthcare. In fact, it can be incredibly expensive. Why risk having to pay out large sums because of injury or illness while on holiday?

When it comes to your health, it is important to be well prepared, as you never know what might happen. A health cover plan is an ideal way to prevent extra anxiety at a time of real stress, but there are many different options available and it is crucial that you choose the one that best suits you and your family’s needs and your budget.

Health cover ensures that you and your family can receive top-quality treatment at a time and location convenient to you. In general, there are three main types of health cover available. They are:

Co-Payment Plans

If you don’t visit the doctor frequently or anticipate any serious health problems, a co-payment plan may be the right choice. Essentially, these cost-effective plans ensure that premiums are kept to a minimum by covering only a percentage of your claim.

Cash Cover Plans

For families on a budget, cash cover plans are worth considering. In most cases, cash cover plans pay a lump sum when you see the doctor or dentist, but are unlikely to cover major procedures, such as operations in private hospitals.

Comprehensive Cover

A comprehensive insurance plan does exactly what is says – it covers a full range of medical emergencies, as well as all the standard facilities and treatment your family will need. These plans are a great solution for those who want total peace of mind.

Those who lead an active, sporty lifestyle often like to take risks and throw caution to the wind, but when it comes to health insurance, it’s wise to leave nothing to chance. Though it is important to live for today, a responsible person must also think of tomorrow and their future health needs.

The Dangers of an Active Lifestyle

What are the dangers of an active lifestyle? First and foremost, someone who engages in an active lifestyle has a higher risk of sustaining a serious injury, regardless of what kind of sport it is. Horse riding, tennis, running, football, surfing, windsurfing and rugby are just some examples of sports in which injuries can happen. Using the National Health Service can mean delays in treatment, but if you have health insurance and obtain prompt treatment, you’ll be back playing sport at the earliest possible opportunity.

How Health Cover Works

Even though the UK has free medical care under the National Health Service, private health cover plans provide extra benefits, which are advantageous for those who live an active lifestyle. Here’s are just some of the advantages:

•    Private health cover allows you to bypass long NHS waiting lists.
•    With private health cover, you will have the best chance to recover in your own room in a private hospital.
•    Health cover is a lot more affordable than you might think, with a variety of different plans and costs.

Today, the necessity for comprehensive health cover is even more apparent than before, especially when it comes to the importance of cancer health cover.

Experts say that the number of cancer cases in the next 10 years is set to continue to rise and almost every family in Britain finds itself stricken by cancer or knows of those who have had to fight the feared disease.

The unfortunate fact is that the UK has one of the worst cancer survival rates in the whole of Europe. This is because the country spends less time than other nations actually treating the disease. As a result, many UK residents are considering taking out private health insurance so they can receive urgent diagnosis and treatment.

Finding the Right Policy

There are many types of health insurance available, with different levels of cover and benefits, so if you want to ensure that you can receive treatment for cancer, or even specific types of cancer from which your and your family might be at risk, you should check that the policy provides the necessary cover before committing to any single plan.

No one likes thinking about the chances of becoming seriously ill, but it is an important to consider how best to protect yourself and your family should the worst happen.

In addition to cancer, there are many other serious health issues that can be covered by medical insurance, such as heart attacks and strokes.

Did you know that more than seven million people in the UK have private medical cover? Many people take out health insurance to complement provision offered under the National Health Service. Some appreciate the convenience and speed that private medical treatment offers. Others value the comfort and cleanliness that health insurance delivers.

Medical insurance goes above and beyond the National Health Service system and helps cover the cost of private medical treatment for illness, injury and general healthcare issues.

There are a number of advantages to having a private medical cover plan. One of the biggest benefits is the peace of mind that comes with knowing you can obtain treatment you need without waiting for the NHS system. Other advantages include:

•    Convenience – little or no waiting for the treatment you need.
•    Options – have the choice of which doctors you see.
•    Quality – excellent standards of care and service.
•    Cleanliness – private hospitals make hygiene a top priority.
•    Attention – private nurses and doctors have more time to look after your needs.

Whatever your requirements, you should take specialist advice about which health insurance policy addresses the needs of you and your family and comes at a price that you can afford.

There are many different types of health cover on the market, so do your homework and study the terms and conditions to find which policy suits you best.

People with a pre-existing medical condition have just as much right to travel abroad on holiday as anyone else.  Unfortunately, many people who fall into this group face paying higher travel insurance premiums.

Travel insurance for people with medical conditions is designed to cover any healthcare costs that might arise as a result of that condition.  It will also cover any unforeseen costs that might arise outside of the pre-existing condition.  Ultimately, this type of travel insurance is designed to lessen the out of pocket cost of treatment resulting from the condition while abroad.  By including any pre-existing medical conditions in your travel insurance, you are protecting yourself financially and your claim will not be denied by the insurance carrier for not disclosing it when you first purchased the policy.

Keep in mind that the insurance carrier has the right to exclude the pre-existing medical condition from your travel insurance.  If you have a medical condition such as asthma or you are pregnant, always ask whether you will be covered in the policy.  If not, it would be best to look for alternative cover.

In addition to travel insurance for a pre-existing condition, you should also look into an EHIC.  An EHIC will allow you to receive needed medical treatment in any country that is part of the European Economic Area (EEA).  This is especially useful if you cannot obtain travel insurance that covers your current medical condition.

The UK has had a National Health Service for over sixty years so why would anyone need health insurance?

Well, under a new government and in a new economic climate cuts are being enforced across the country in hospitals, clinics and other vital services.  Waiting times are continuously increasing, damaging the level of service available to the public; primary care trusts have been abolished by the coalition, significantly restricting care for those in real need; fertility services have been drastically cut as have weight-loss treatments; ophthalmology and orthopaedic sectors are suffering and the list could go on and on.

Increasingly GP’s are referring patients to private services because the NHS simply cannot cope any longer.  According to models published by HM Treasury the NHS will be underfunded by several billion in four year’s time.  Under the current government the service will only continue its decline.  Andrew Lansley, UK Health Secretary, had little answers when confronted in April by angry health workers in relation to unexpected job cuts.  One disgruntled union worker claimed Lansley lied about the extent of the cuts planned when he visited St. George’s Healthcare NHS Trust in 2009.  Lansley promised frontline staff would not be affected yet St. George’s budget has been slashed by £55 million.

Less money going to services such as St. George’s entails less money for frontline staff, less money for vital equipment, less care and less chance of curing illnesses.  Health insurance seems to be the only protection against the drastic reductions emplaced upon health care throughout the country.

Health Insurance Features

There are many providers of health insurance each offering a range of features within their policies, along with pricing schemes to match what they offer.  Insurers offer a variety of common features in their policies.

One common feature of a health insurance policy is often prompt access to treatment compared to the equivalent waiting time through state provision.  The guarantee of treatment by competent consultants and specialists without a long waiting period is perhaps the greatest benefit of these schemes.  A straightforward and accessible claims service may be a feature of an insurance provider to allow minimum complication should the policyholder require treatment.  Access to private hospitals may be another feature, which is particularly important given the concern that many have about the cleanliness of specific local hospitals.

Depending on the policy wording, a policyholder may also be eligible to receive new drugs and treatments to which they otherwise may not receive access.  Another common feature of private healthcare is a 24-hour nurse-led helpline, which can offer first-contact advice and medical guidance.

It is important that policyholders check their documents to ensure what they are covered against and entitled to in the event that they need treatment.  Policy documents may often be complicated or contain industry-specific words.  If a policyholder does not understand any aspect of their policy, they should contact their healthcare insurer.  Private healthcare is often associated with high quality of treatment and greater satisfaction in the nursing and recovery process.
