As the popularity of pet insurance grows the market for cover becomes more competitive, which allows consumers more choice.  However, because so many plans now exist, it can also be confusing when deciding between the different options.  So, in order to find the pet insurance plan that is right for your pet, here are some basic questions to ask.

When Will the Plan Take Effect?

Just as with any other type of cover, there is usually a waiting period for the policy to kick in.  It is important to know exactly what this period is so that you don’t have to pay out of pocket expenses you typically wouldn’t under cover.

What is and is Not Covered?

It is good to know what is and is not covered.  Are pre-existing conditions excluded?  Will your plan help cover expenses incurred if your pet is lost?  Will your routine vet visits be covered or not?  You will also want to ask if prescriptions, spaying, and neutering will be covered.

Shopping for pet insurance online can help you compare quotes, do a lot of research, and find the lowest premiums with the highest amount of coverage possible.  You will also have a lot more choice when you shop online.  Perhaps you would like to buy your pet insurance from a charity rather than from the underwriter directly although usually, going directly to the underwriter will allow for more affordable premiums or discounted rates.
